Recently our Editorial Team learned of a story which we found fascinating. It was about a personal letter from the head of a major global company to his hand-picked replacement upon his retirement. He wrote about his love of Asia and why he believes it’s the future of the multinational company he led for a decade.
It is smart, insightful and contains the kind of wisdom and candour that’s rarely shared with media. We wanted to print it for our community.
We have agreed to redact all names and edit out any personal or corporate information which may betray confidences. We felt this was a very compelling and deeply personal story about one business leader’s view of Asia and we’re thrilled to be able to share it with our audience. So this letter is shared with the permission of everyone involved.
“Dear [Name Redacted],
I am writing to you to share my insights into why Asia is the most important place for business. And as I pass the baton to you, I want to leave you my thoughts on the future of our company. I have had the privilege of leading our company for the past 10 years, and I have seen firsthand the incredible growth and opportunity that this region has to offer.
I still remember my first trip to Asia. I was immediately energized by the vibrant culture, the dynamic economy, and the young and ambitious workforce. I knew right away that this was a region that our company needed to be a part of.
Over the past 10 years, I have seen our company grow and succeed in Asia. We have built strong relationships with our customers, partners, and employees. We have developed innovative products and services that meet the needs of the Asian and global market. And we have created a culture of inclusion and diversity that is reflective of the region.
I am proud of what we have accomplished in Asia, but I know that the best is yet to come. I believe that Asia is the future of our company. The region is home to a rapidly growing population, a rising middle class, a young and educated workforce, a digitally connected population, and a diverse and dynamic environment. Businesses that are able to tap into these opportunities will be well-positioned to succeed globally.
I am confident that you will continue to build on the success that we have achieved together. You have the skills, the experience, and the passion to lead our company to even greater heights. I just want to leave you with the notion, that our future is as much in Asia as it is in [Home Country Redacted]. I know there are moves these days to onshore companies, but resist that. Asia is too big, too exciting and represents too much of our future growth to replace. That may be an unpopular thought, but it’s what I know in my heart.
I wish you all the best in your new role as CEO. If you enjoy your time as much as I have mine, you have a fabulously exciting career ahead of you.
Sincerely, [Name Redacted]”
