In the second part of our video series on biotechnology in Asia we look at how biotech is helping Thailand’s shrimp industry. The industry was hit with disease in 2010 which saw production levels fall to under half of what they used to be. This was devastating.
Technology saved the day and the future
Using biotechnology scientists were able to isolate the bacterium which caused the disease. Now shrimp farmers regularly test their stocks to avoid contaminating others and before introducing new stocks to their farms test to make sure it is pathogen free. The results are healthy shrimp stocks and more profitable farmers.
This is another example of how biotechnology is changing lives in Asia.
