Renowned Paris-based Japanese artist itu’ has brought his visionary art to Zentis Osaka, transforming the design-forward hotel with a captivating installation that spans public spaces and redefines one of its Corner Studios.
Dubbed ‘crossover’, itu’ drew inspiration from his own experiences at the upscale lifestyle hotel. “Zentis is a place where diverse people gather – regardless of nationality, generation or culture – and where each person’s values transcend borders and naturally intermingle,” observed the artist.
With this installation, itu’ aims to blur the boundaries between art and people, challenging traditional perceptions of art as purely observational. “While the work being viewed and the viewer are separate entities, naturally, the relationship between them changes depending on how they interact and the factors surrounding an interaction,” itu’ explained.
The debut ‘Art-in-Residence’ program at Zentis Osaka features over a dozen of itu’s artworks displayed throughout the hotel. Not confined to traditional canvases, itu’ has infused his free-spirited artistry into non-traditional mediums such as glassware, furnishings, curtains, bedding, and other everyday items in a specially transformed Corner Studio now known as ‘itu’s Art Studio’.
Guests staying in ‘itu’s Art Studio’ will immerse themselves in an art-centric environment, where they can also take home specially painted slippers – each pair unique and hand-painted by itu’ himself.
In addition to the studio, the integration of art extends to the hotel’s public spaces, where staff don custom-painted uniforms by itu’, including stylish footwear, echoing his diverse artistic collaborations.
At UPSTAIRZ Bar, head bartender Norihiko Furuse has crafted an original cocktail inspired by itu’s distinctive style. The vodka-based drink features delicate notes of cedar and sweet white peach, balanced with earthy sandalwood undertones for a sophisticated taste experience.
Born in Japan’s Aichi prefecture, itu’ established his own atelier in Paris’ Marais district in 2014, gaining international acclaim for his playful style and vibrant palette. His decade-long career includes exhibitions in France and Singapore, pop-up shows, murals, and collaborations with renowned brands.
Kiyotaka Saito, Zentis Osaka’s new general manager, shared, “Since our arrival in Osaka four years ago, we aimed to become a cultural hub for art, music, and craftsmanship. Collaborations with artists like itu’ and cultural initiatives such as our ‘Salon de Zentis’ series are designed to offer guests enriching experiences that broaden their understanding and appreciation of Japan.”
Appointed ahead of the property’s fourth anniversary, Saito brings nearly three decades of experience with Palace Hotel Group, including cross-training in London’s iconic hotels like The Savoy and Claridge’s. As Osaka gears up to host Expo 2025, Saito looks forward to welcoming global travelers to Zentis Osaka.
‘Zentis Art-in-Residence: itu’s Crossover’ is open until September 30, 2024. Reservations for ‘itu’s Art Studio’ are available through October 31, 2024, subject to availability, with rates starting from JPY45,000 per night inclusive of taxes and service charge.
