Trailblazing Sustainability: Banyan Tree Krabi Leads with EarthCheck’s Silver Certification

In a significant achievement for sustainable tourism in Thailand, Banyan Tree Krabi has become the first hotel in the region to receive a Silver Certification from EarthCheck, the world’s leading scientific benchmarking organization for the hospitality industry. This recognition underscores the resort’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices.

The award follows a rigorous audit by EarthCheck, which assessed the resort’s performance in ten key areas, including greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency, freshwater resource management, ecosystem conservation and management, social and cultural management, land use planning and management, air quality protection, wastewater management, solid waste management, and the management of environmentally harmful substances.

Bingni Wu, Relationship Manager at EarthCheck, emphasized the stringent criteria that members must meet annually. “Sustainability is not just about ticking boxes,” Wu said. “It’s about making real, ongoing changes.”

Thepsuda Loyjiw, Head of Banyan Tree Krabi’s Sustainability Team, echoed this sentiment, noting that the resort continually strives to reduce consumption rates through improved efficiency and the adoption of new technology or practices. The resort offers a range of eco-friendly activities to guests, including forest bathing and hiking in the adjoining national park, Thai cookery classes, Thai boxing, Thai language lessons, and visits to an elephant sanctuary. The hotel also organizes beach clean-up campaigns and tours to a local fishing community where guests can participate in handcraft workshops.

Looking ahead, Loyjiw revealed that her team is preparing to implement a cage-free egg policy at the hotel and a sustainable seafood program.

Nestled on the secluded Tubkaek Beach and flanked by a forested national park, Banyan Tree Krabi offers breathtaking views of the sea and karst limestone towers. The resort, which opened in 2020, features 72 pool suites and villas, including a seven-bedroom beachfront Presidential Villa. Guests can enjoy a variety of facilities, including two restaurants, a beach bar, a beach club, a kids’ club, a fitness center, meeting rooms, and a rainforest-themed spa.

Banyan Tree Krabi aims to emulate the success of its sister resort, Banyan Tree Samui, which was recently awarded the highest level of certification, Platinum, by EarthCheck. Both resorts were recognized in the prestigious Conde Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards this year, with Banyan Tree Krabi voted No 4 in the Top Resorts in Thailand category, and Banyan Tree Samui claiming the No 5 title.
